Many of the projects undertaken by On Target Enterprises require intimate
understanding and manipulation of large quantities of organized and
unorganized data. Many of the filing, ordering, and sorting tasks can
be done with the use of commercial, off the shelf (COTS) database tools.
Some of the more interesting relational aspects, however, are poorly suited
to COTS tools. While their properties could be forced into traditional
structures and sorted according to standard rules, the resulting database
size, speed, and visualization aspects are compromised.
On Target Enterprises treats these difficulties as opportunities to solve
a series of challenges associated with database manipulation. We are
familiar with the representation and storage of data on modern computer
facilities. We have intimate domain knowledge of certain types of
information and what users want. These characteristics allow us to
design solutions combining standard storage mechanisms with custom
manipulation tools to store, sort, and present the data for optimum
benefit.

Data Mining - Street Mapping
An example of this kind of a database challenge is represented by the
needs of computer-based street mapping. Each street segment has attributes
of postal addressing as well as geographical position. Applying this data
to a standard database allows searching and indexing for addresses, but
lacks the capability to display the geographical data as a map. Drawing
software allows graphical visualization but has no facility for attaching
or manipulating address information. This classical problem is called the
"cadastral" database. The most expensive and complicated GIS software such
as those provided by Intergraph provide a mechanism for linking expensive
and complicated database information, but then require powerful computers
and highly trained operators to ask simple questions of the data.
On Target
Enterprises designs solutions combining the natural viewing and graphical
manipulation features of Windows together with a database representation
that is fast, compact, and easy
to use. The capability was so successful that it became the basis of a
commercial CD-ROM product sold in retail mapping stores.
This approach produces compact data sets with useful information at the
user’s fingertips easily available for communication and understanding. On
Target Enterprises anticipates that these techniques are applicable to a
wide range of similar problems. Today’s world offers a vast and growing
quantity of data. Users with access to this data need techniques to extract
useful information. Standard tools suffice for many traditional sorting and
query tasks, but creative thinking needs to be applied to connect everyday
users to the information they need quickly and easily. Sometimes combining
traditional database tools with application-specific manipulation and
visualization techniques may solve these problems.
